January to February 2000

This area is mostly for my friends & family. Photos were taken with a Kodak DC20 or a Kodak DC120 Zoom, scaled & in some cases color corrected.

The view from the top of the Delores Park in the Mission.

Broadway near Grant.

Couldn't help but start with this picture. The newest addition to my collection of old building-side advertisements. This one is in Chinatown. COLON? What were they advertising? Just colon?
Audience: Three guys who fit the type of Chinese male I always figure must be triad members. Neatly but not expensively dressed, with conservative haircuts, sometimes sporting sunglasses and cellphones. They tend to loiter in small numbers, never more than three together at once, and are never, ever caught with a wife or kids on the street.

Yes, the sign just below COLON sez "Sweet Fragrance Cafe."

Pine St. somewhere near Mason.

For some reason this photo makes me think of a multi-level motel in Arizona - not that I ever saw one there.
Audience: For some reason every time I find myself on Pine, there's an old lady walking down the street or sitting on a porch somewhere. It's never the same one, either. The one there this day didn't see me snap this picture because she was ahead of me, walking the same direction.

Nob Hill - Leavenworth & Clay?

There are several high-rise apartment buildings mysteriously hidden on Nob Hill, and this is a light fixture in the ceiling of a car entrance in front of one. Maybe not my best no-content photo ever, but I kind of like it.
Audience: Two jogging women who saw me and my camera, watched me take such an unlikely photo, and looked at me warily, as if I was actually lurking around to snap photos of unsuspecting joggers. Not likely.

Washington at Columbus.

Just what is it with me and parking garage entrances? I love how this one has black & yellow hazard stripes painted around its mouth. If you look real close you can just make out the multicolored string of Christmas lights above the entrance. The sign just says "Park."
Audience: Two Phillipino ladies who were waiting for a third to retrieve her car from the garage. One of them was old, and complaining to the other. Apparently she had a lot of nice things, like her pearl necklace, but was bemoaning a lack of heirs. Had to wait for them to leave before I took this, but should've thanked their friend for taking so long, because boredom made me find the "water" picture below.

Stockton at California.

Seems like one never knows when a camera would be handy. This one was practically taken from the front step of my apartment building. I can never seem to get enough of the view.
Audience: None.

Washington at Columbus.

Another old building-side advertisement, this one mostly hidden by two noisy billboards.
Audience: See the "parking garage" picture, above.

Also Washington at Columbus
My only successful picture of one of my favorite builings in the city. Somehow curved windows are quintessentially San Francisco to me.
Audience: None

Market around Sanchez - the Castro.

Nice rainbow, huh?
